ABOUT LIVVIE RENNY

I am an interdisciplinary artist, who creates a dialogue between art and science within my practice. My work is underpinned by the notions and ideas surrounding the two respective subjects. Art and science have had a long-standing link and are more alike than many people would believe, both look for answers and challenge theories - executed in a different way but the fundamental thought process being the same. As artists, we constantly seek to understand concepts and challenge ideas, as does science. The use of experimenting with different ways to achieve an end goal or understand a theory or idea attributes itself to both art and science.

My works evoke scientific imagery through the representation of bacteria found in a petri dish. The constant visualisation of bacteria is displayed throughout my work and is elevated by, arguably, the protagonist of science; the circular form. The glossy glass-like finish of the resin displayed on the white walls, alongside the consistent circular form only begs the audience to conjure up images of a laboratory setting.

My practice revolves around the aesthetics of science, rather than the theory. Looking at the patterns bacteria produce and how pleasing they are, is central to my practice. The materiality of my work is important in relation to the concepts surrounding my practice. Creating these fragile pieces from resin reinforces the juxtaposition of man-made vs natural. The work's material is so harshly chemically-based but representing the natural aesthetic of our world. Through this juxtaposition of concepts and materials, we see a dialogue starting to emerge. My work is continually informed by the visual qualities of cellular structure and biomorphic forms, the long-standing link - as previously mentioned - is continued through my practice using scientific imagery alongside artistic technique.
